Notifications & reminders

The reminders we push to your phone, the daily email, and how to change or switch either off.

We nudge you two ways: push notifications on your phone, and a daily email. Push settings live in the app; the daily email, plus the account timezone used for reminders, daily emails and calendar syncing, live on the web.

What we send

With notifications on for your account and allowed on your phone, we send:

  • an alert before each assignment is due, as often as you pick
  • a morning summary of what's due today
  • a heads-up 30 minutes before each scheduled class
  • a nudge 10 minutes before a study block starts
  • a note when we've finished reading a syllabus and it's ready for you to look over, or when flashcards or a practice test are ready — including ones you asked Duey to make
  • anything you ask Duey to remind you about. With the Auto menu, tell Duey what to remind you of and when, approve the card it shows you, and that push goes out at the time you agreed. Study blocks Duey adds to your Calendar get the same 10-minute nudge as any other.

Duey never sends a push on its own. Everything it can trigger is something you approved first.

Marking an assignment or a study block complete stops the rest of its reminders. Assignment alerts and class heads-ups skip archived classes.

Two places, not one

Push reminders are set in the iPhone or Android app. The web Notifications tab holds your timezone and the daily email — there are no push controls there.

Turn push reminders on

In the app, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
Under Preferences, tap Notifications.
Turn on Enable Notifications, which covers every Due Gooder reminder. If we don't already have permission, your phone may ask for it.
If you turned notifications down earlier, a sheet asks you to go to settings to enable notifications for Due Gooder. Tap Open Settings, allow them there, then come back.

While Enable Notifications is off, the rest of the screen greys out.

Choose how often we nudge you

On the same screen, under Assignment reminders:

OptionWhat you get
BasicMorning summary, then 3h before due
ModerateMorning summary, then 6h, 3h, and 1h before
ExtremeModerate, plus every 30m in the final 3h

New accounts start on Basic. Extreme works out to alerts 6, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5 and 1 hour before, plus one 30 minutes before.

Under Morning summary, pick 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM. We use 8:00 AM until you change it. The summary can land up to 14 minutes after the time you picked, never before it — we spread the sending out so a whole timezone doesn't get pushed at the same minute.

Under Classes, 30 min Before Class has its own switch and is on to start with.

Every choice saves on its own. There's no save button.

Something due very soon

A Basic reminder can't fire for an assignment that's already inside three hours of its due time, because that mark has passed. Moderate and Extreme can still alert you if one of their later reminder times hasn't passed.

Turn them off

Open the gear, then Settings, then Notifications, and turn Enable Notifications off. That silences assignment, morning, class and study block reminders, the ones you set with Duey, and the notes about a finished syllabus or study set, for the whole account and every device you're signed into.

To quiet one phone but not another, or to go silent overnight, use that device's own iOS or Android notification controls. We don't have a quiet hours setting.

The daily email

On the web, open Settings, then the Notifications tab.
Under Email Notifications, turn on Daily Email Summary.
Open Delivery Time and pick a slot. There are 48, every half hour from 12:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Check the time that's already showing, because it isn't the same on every account.
Under Email Format, choose Compact (a simple list), Detailed (classes and assignments), Priority (an urgency timeline) or Minimal (a quick summary).
If you've connected Google Calendar, turn on Include Calendar Events and today's events ride along in the emails you already get.

Each change saves as you make it. The email goes out only on days you have at least one unfinished assignment due that day in a class you haven't archived, so calendar events on their own won't trigger one, and Duedles never appear in it. Look for "Daily Summary" in the subject line.

If the times look wrong

Reminders, daily emails and calendar syncing all run on one account timezone, so that's the first thing to check when a reminder shows up at an odd hour.

On the web, open Settings, then Notifications.
Under Timezone, open Account timezone.
Type in Search timezones... or scroll the list, then pick yours. We confirm with "Timezone set to" and the zone you chose.
To go back to following whichever device you're on, choose Use this device.

One thing the timezone won't fix: a class reminder that shifts by an hour after the clocks change. Check the class's meeting time first, and if the alert is still wrong, tell us.

The "Get the iOS app" banner

Once your account has at least one class, the web dashboard shows a Get the iOS app banner. Download opens the App Store listing in a new tab, and Dismiss hides it until your next browser session. On a narrow screen the banner shrinks to a phone icon with Download and Dismiss.

The banner shows on Android and desktop too, and it only links to the App Store, so Android students should start from Android instead.
